How to find and transmit your ".tax" file prepared with FutureTax 2012

At the Ready to file page, read and agree to the terms and conditions. Confirm that the CRA has your current personal information on file. This will bring you to the NETFILE transmission page.

Step 1 - Identification

Enter your personal identifiers: social insurance number (do not enter dashes or spaces) and date of birth. When changing fields, use the "Tab" key, do not use the "Enter" key.

Scroll down to Step 2 - Attaching a return

Note: In Windows 7 and 8, Windows Vista and Windows XP, when you are looking for your ".tax" file, make sure you are looking in the same user account that you prepared and saved the return.

Attach the file containing your income tax return that was prepared with FutureTax 2012:

Windows 8 Metro Mode
  • click the Browse (Choose) button;
  • click on Files on the top left corner;
  • click on Documents;
  • click the FutureTax folder;
  • select JoeSmith2012.tax
  • click the Open button;
  • please note that your ".tax" file is now attached and ready to transmit to the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA).
Windows 7 and Windows 8 Desktop Mode (Classic)
  • click the Browse (Choose) button;
  • select Libraries from the left side menu;
  • double-click on Documents;
  • double-click the FutureTax folder;
  • select JoeSmith2012.tax
  • click the Open button;
  • please note that your ".tax" file is now attached and ready to transmit to the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA).
Windows Vista
  • click the Browse (Choose) button;
  • select Documents from the left side menu;
  • double-click the FutureTax folder;
  • click to select JoeSmith2012.tax;
  • click the Open button;
  • please note that your ".tax" file is now attached and ready to transmit to the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA).
Windows XP, 2000
  • click the Browse (Choose) button;
  • click the drop-down list;
  • click to select the (C:) drive;
  • double-click the My Documents from the left side menu;
  • double-click the FutureTax folder;
  • click to select JoeSmith2012.tax;
  • click the Open button;
  • please note that your ".tax" file is now attached and ready to transmit to the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA).

Scroll down to Step 3 - Balance due

Read the instructions for Step 3 if you have a balance due.

Scroll down to Step 4 - Declaration

Click the I agree. File my return now! button. If you are successful, you will receive a confirmation number.


Note: Make sure that your system is not set up to hide file extensions, or you may have difficulty finding the correct file to send to the CRA. Also, do not try to open these files, as they are not intended to be opened in standard programs and will not be readable. If you open them, you risk making changes that could cause your return to be altered or rejected by our systems.
